1. What
skills do I need for an online web design class?
Online web design classes are generally considered advanced software
applications or programming courses. Students enrolled in these
courses need (at a minimum) strong Windows skills and strong Internet
skills, including
- File management (creating,
removing, and moving files and folders).
- Web surfing skills, including the ability to download
files
- Email skills, including how to work with attachments.
- Ability to work with compressed files like ZIP files.
Our skills assessment page has more details.
2. Do the online classes ever meet on
campus?
No. Online courses never meet on campus. NLC does not have an
orientation session for you to attend.
3. Which class should I take?
Please see our course ladder for help.
If you are still uncertain please email Sharon.
4. Do I have to purchase my own software?
Yes, you do have to purchase your own software. Don't run
out to CompUSA, though -- purchasing from an academic retailer
can save you up to 75% on select titles. Academic retailers include efollet.com, journeyed.com,
or creationengine.com.
You will probably have to email or fax your paid fee receipt to
the retailer to qualify. Each retailer is different, please see
their sites and policies for more information.
5. What about textbooks?
Most classes require textbooks. We have a list of all textbooks
required for online web design classes. You can purchase the textbooks
wherever you like -- if you purchase a used textbook make sure
it contains the CD (if applicable.)
6. I have a Mac. Can I still take your
courses?
It depends. Most NLC instructors do not have
Mac skills, so if you run into a Mac-specific problem you will
have to solve it on your own. If you are confident that you can
overcome any Mac-related problems feel free to sign up for any
course except Web Multimedia (which uses software not available
for the Mac) and
7. Do I have to have an Internet connection?
Yes, you do have to have an Internet connection. the majority
of our students have dial-up connections with companies such as
AOL or CompuServe. Broadband (while nice) is not required.
8. Can I "test out" of your
classes?
No. You may, with instructor approval, skip a class. (For example,
skip Graphics I to take Graphics II.) In general the departments
do not have old finals or other tests which you may use to test
out. In our experience the main reason people want to test out
is to get a college credit – if that’s an issue you’re
facing, you would be much better off exploring Credit by Examination
or another equally widespread program which can insure that your
credits will continue to transfer.
