Project 2 - Photography Studio Project - Due 5/11/06

Student Example: Matthew Caldwell
Student Example: Autumn Perry

Goal: Students will build an interactive web site using Macromedia Flash. This will include correct use of Flash concepts outlined in the "Technical Objectives " section.

Description: You have been hired to develop a Flash portfolio for a local photography company. The site will feature a photography gallery, buttons, a menu system, bitmap artwork, multiple scenes, and audio.

Instructions:

  1. The photographer has a few requirements for the program. First of all, the site must feature four different categories of photography he uses in his business (weddings, children, real estate, food photography, etc.). Each category must show four separate images, for a total of sixteen images. (Students may invent categories.)
  2. Each category should be a separate scene. The home page should be a scene as well, for a total of five scenes.
  3. You may use either buttons or menus as the primary navigational element in your project, so long as you are consistent. If you start out using buttons, continue to use buttons in every scene. Alternatively, if you start out using menus, use menus in every scene. However, you need to demonstrate that you understand how to implement BOTH menus AND buttons. Accordingly, if you choose to use buttons as your primary navigational element, you must add a navigational menu to at least one scene. Alternatively, if you choose to use menus as your primary navigational element, you must add navigational buttons to at least one scene. An easy way to do this is to have both buttons and a menu in your opening scene, then use either buttons OR menus in all remaining scenes.
  4. Be creative! You could just slap the four photographs on the page, but you can probably find a more interesting way to view them. How about having the first one fade in and then fade out, to be replaced by the next? What about using buttons to move from one photo to the next? How about thumbnail displays that will enlarge themselves as you mouse over them?
  5. You may use any photos you have a legal right to use. You may also use Sharon Huston's work.
  6. Begin by creating your scenes and buttons. Next, move on to the menu system. Once you have the basic navigational framework in place you can work on the details. Don't leave the menus and buttons for the last, no matter how tempting.
